Aerial Silks Skills, Beginner/Open Level - 112524

Prerequisite: No prior experience is required. All levels are welcome. Some level of core and leg strength is beneficial.

Learn to climb, swing, drop, flip, spin, and perform using two vertical lengths of strong Aerial Silk material suspended from the ceiling. Students will develop grip strength, coordination, flexibility, shoulder and abdominal strength while learning climbs, inversions, holds, rotations, and other aerial skills.

What to Wear: Wear comfortable, tight-fitting clothing such as tights or leggings. Please do not wear wide-bottom pants. Your stomach, the backs of your knees, and armpits must be covered to help protect your skin while working on the silks.

Age Requirement: Students must be at least 17 years old or receive permission from the instructor prior to registration. Please email budance@bu.edu for more information.

Aerial Silks Skills, Intermediate - 112525

Prerequisite: At least one full year of aerial silks experience and the ability to invert from a climb. Students should be comfortable performing both straddle inversions and knee hooks in the air and have experience confidently performing several different types of drops.

This class is designed for aerialists who are already proficient with aerial silks and are ready to further develop their skills beyond the foundational aerial silks skills classes. Students will work on more advanced skills, sequences, and techniques while building strength, coordination, and confidence in the air. This is a faster-paced class with increased skill progression and complexity.

Aerial Choreography, Intermediate - 112527

Prerequisite: At least one full year of aerial silks experience and the ability to invert from a climb. Students should be comfortable performing both straddle inversions and knee hooks in the air and have experience confidently performing several different types of drops.

This class is designed for experienced aerialists who are looking to develop their performance skills through choreography on aerial silks. Students will learn and practice choreographed sequences while exploring musicality, transitions, movement quality, and performance presence. The class will challenge students to combine their existing aerial skills into dynamic and expressive movement sequences while continuing to build strength, coordination, and confidence in the air.

Hoop and Trapeze, Beginner/Open Level - 112533

Prerequisite: No prior experience is required. All levels are welcome.

New to aerial dance? This class introduces the foundations of good technique on lyra/aerial hoop and trapeze. Students will develop strength, coordination, balance, and flexibility while building new skills on each apparatus. Class begins with a thorough warm-up before moving into basic movements and sequencing on both the hoop and trapeze. Emphasis is placed on proper technique and strength in each movement to help students develop confidence, control, and grace in the air.

What to Wear: Wear comfortable, tight-fitting clothing such as tights or leggings. Please do not wear wide-bottom pants. Your stomach, the backs of your knees, and armpits must be covered. Shorts are not recommended. Bringing optional layers is encouraged, as the bar and rope apparatuses can sometimes be less forgiving on the skin.

The Guest Artist Series, hosted by FitRec Dance, brings the BU community into the studio with recognized dance teachers and artists from across the Boston area. Each session offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from inspiring local talent, experience new styles and perspectives, and connect with the wider dance community.

Each event features a 75-minute dance class led by a guest artist, followed by a short break and an engaging Q&A moderated by FitRec’s Manager of Dance Programs. Come ready to move, learn, ask questions, and get to know the people behind the work.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS

Isiah “Zay” Beasley is a dedicated dancer, choreographer, and teacher born and raised in Boston, MA. With over 20 years of experience in the dance and entertainment industry, his work spans community events, films, music videos, artist development, and touring. He has taught students of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds, fostering a welcoming environment where everyone can grow through dance. Recognized by the City of Boston for his mentorship and artistry with a city citation, Isiah continues to make a lasting impact both on and off the dance floor. He strives to inspire everyone who walks through the door to dance with freedom, confidence, and passion.

Pat Planet has a knack for getting dancers to go from basic to basically amazing! Originally from New York City, Pat grew up training extensively with the industry’s leading movers & technicians at the Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, and Alvin Ailey. By the age of 17, he began dancing professionally for TV, commercials, and live stage performances. Some of his credits include Britney Spears, Weezer, Macy’s, Redbull, TEDx, Law and Order, AMF, and more. In 2022, Pat made history with the NBA Boston Celtics, debuting as one of their first male dancers. Since then, Pat has choreographed for teams in the NBA, NFL, IFL, EHL, and beyond. He has taught at universities like the Boston Conservatory, Harvard University, and Endicott College, and has partnered with Bloch as one of their Educators. Pat specializes in commercial styles like Jazz Funk, Hip-Hop, and Pro-Style.

Musical Theater, Advanced Beginner - 112557

Prerequisite: No prior jazz or musical theatre experience is required, though previous experience is helpful.

Dancers will explore musical theatre classics, primarily through jazz technique. Classes will begin with a cardio- and strength-based warm-up set to a Broadway playlist, followed by progressive jazz sequences across the floor to build dancers’ movement vocabulary and technical skills. Students will develop their jazz technique while exploring the style, energy, and performance qualities of musical theatre.

What to Wear: Please wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing. Avoid jeans and baggy sweatpants. Joggers, shorts, leggings, jazz pants, T-shirts, tank tops, crop tops, and sports bras are all great options. Dancers may choose to wear jazz shoes, sneakers, socks, half soles, or dance barefoot. For the end-of-semester performance, dancers will likely wear black shoes.

Performance: This is a performance-based class. Students will have the opportunity to perform in the end-of-semester show. Participation in the performance is optional.

Ballroom (Latin), Beginner - 112698

Prerequisite: No prior experience is required.

This course is designed as an introduction to the Latin Style of Ballroom dancing. Students who have had little or no instruction in this style of dance should begin their instruction here. The course is also in-depth enough for students who may have taken previous Latin Style Ballroom classes for the purpose of building confidence and gaining additional dance experience with a partner. Typically, two dances per semester are introduced on a rotating basis: Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cha Cha, Rhumba, and/or Argentine Tango. Students will have the opportunity to learn the skills of both leader and follower.

Heels is designed to build self-esteem and confidence through a fun, exciting, sassy, and empowering fusion of hip hop and jazz. Students will develop their technique in hip hop, jazz, and choreography while exploring movement, musicality, and performance in a supportive environment.

What to Bring: All genders are welcome! Please bring both sneakers and/or heels. Heels are not required to participate in the class.
