Bouldering, Beginner - 131102

Learn all the skills necessary to boulder and improve as a boulderer at any indoor climbing gym. Instruction will include fundamental technique, safety procedures, socio-environmental contexts for climbing, route analysis and dissection, strength and conditioning, boulder projecting, and other relevant topics.

There is an equipment rental fee of $40 required to borrow shoes and a chalk bag. Any student who pays the rental fee will receive a “semester pass” for climbing gear to use throughout the semester, including at open rec. You can purchase your semester gear pass here.

Bouldering, Advanced - 131104

Course prerequisite: must be able to consistently climb V3+

This advanced bouldering class is designed to elevate intermediate climbers to the next level. Through targeted drills, movement analysis, and mental training, participants will refine technique, improve body awareness, and gain tools to project higher-grade problems. Each session builds upon the previous, emphasizing intentional progression and personal accountability in climbing growth.

Lead Climbing - 131105

Lead climbing is an advanced style of climbing that involves pulling the rope from beneath you and clipping into fixed or placed gear as you climb up a rock wall. In this course you will learn how to lead climb and learn advanced belay techniques for giving slack to a lead climber.

Minimum qualifications: Ability to climb 5.9 comfortably and top rope belay certified.

Gym to Crag - 131106

Please note the dates and time of this course. This course will be a total of 3 sessions on Fridays and will leave campus for the day. The first class date will be 2 hours consisting of a skills check and program run through. The last class date listed is a rain date, if needed.

Ready to transition from the climbing gym to real rock? This comprehensive Gym to Crag introduction course teaches you the essential safety, anchor construction and cleaning, and outdoor movement skills required to climb outdoors with confidence. Course topics include outdoor climbing safety and etiquette, anchor systems and cleaning, and basic movement techniques to adapt your gym climbing skills to natural rock features, including crack climbing basics and footwork.

Transportation will be provided as you travel from FitRec to a different local crag each class. Locations will be TBD based on weather and other factors.

Introduction to Trad Climbing - 131107

Please note the dates and time of this course. This course will be a total of 3 sessions on Fridays and will leave campus for the day. The first class date will be 2 hours consisting of a skills check and program run through. The last class date listed is a rain date, if needed.

Ready to take your climbing off the bolts and into the cracks? This comprehensive Intro to Trad Climbing course teaches you the foundational skills needed to safely place your own protection and build gear anchors. Course topics include proper gear placement and selection, principles of equalization, redundancy, and extension using natural and artificial protection, identifying natural crack systems when selecting a route, and crag etiquette.

Transportation will be provided as you travel from FitRec to a different local crag each class. Locations will be TBD based on weather and other factors.


Minimum qualifications: Ability to climb 5.9 comfortably on lead and lead belay certified. You will need to pass a lead test on an ATC during your first class in order to continue on with the course. If you do not pass, you will be dropped from the course.

To ensure this course is the right fit for your current experience level, you must answer a brief series of screening questions before your registration is finalized. Please note that if your technical background does not meet our safety prerequisites, we will remove you from the course roster.

This class offers a basic understanding of the concepts of alignment, centering, breathing, stabilization, mobilization, and balance. Non-impact, whole body conditioning mat exercises based on the work of fitness pioneer Joseph Pilates are designed to develop body awareness, improve posture, and enhance muscle recruitment. The mat work increases core strength, builds muscle tone, and improves coordination, balance, and flexibility. The mat can be modified to various fitness levels so that each student will work at the appropriate level.
