Ready to take your climbing off the bolts and into the cracks? This comprehensive Intro to Trad Climbing course teaches you the foundational skills needed to safely place your own protection and build gear anchors. Course topics include proper gear placement and selection, principles of equalization, redundancy, and extension using natural and artificial protection, identifying natural crack systems when selecting a route, and crag etiquette.

Transportation will be provided as you travel from FitRec to a different local crag each class. Locations will be TBD based on weather and other factors.

Minimum qualifications: Ability to climb 5.9 comfortably on lead and lead belay certified. You will need to pass a lead test on an ATC during your first class in order to continue on with the course. If you do not pass, you will be dropped from the course.

To ensure this course is the right fit for your current experience level, you must answer a brief series of screening questions before your registration is finalized. Please note that if your technical background does not meet our safety prerequisites, we will remove you from the course roster.

There is an equipment rental fee of $40 to borrow shoes, harness, belay device, chalk bag, and helmet. Any student who pays the rental fee will receive a “semester pass” for climbing gear to use throughout the semester, including at open rec. You can purchase your semester gear pass here.
