    110150 - Stroke Improvement

    For swimmers who have a comprehensive understanding of the front crawl stroke, are comfortable with backstroke and breaststroke, and know the dolphin kick. Students learn drills for skill improvement. Emphasis is on body form, stroke efficiency, and conditioning of all the strokes. Prerequisites: ability to swim 100 yards of the crawl stroke continuously, 25 yards of backstroke continuously, and 25 yards of breaststroke continuously.

    For intermediate and advanced swimmers who want to improve their fitness and technique through workouts and drills. This class will focus on applying the basics of fitness swimming, including technique drills, flip turns, reading a pace clock and interval training that includes endurance, speed and strength sets. Coached workouts are provided for each class. Prerequisites: ability to swim 200 yards continuously and have competence in front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Students should be able to swim 500 yards in less than 15 minutes.

    Looking for ways to alleviate pain and excess tension? This class will focus on techniques and perspectives from Pilates and the Alexander Technique that can give participants a toolkit of practical exercises. We'll look at methods that can help keep participants strong and balanced, while reducing their risk of repetitive stress injuries. Musicians, visual artists, and movement artists, with postural concerns or overuse ailments, and those who sit at computers too many hours in a day, will find this class beneficial. Open to all in the BU community and general public. This class will run concurrently with the free member class for faculty, staff and alumni.

    Learn to climb, swing, drop, flip, spin, and perform using two vertical lengths of very strong, Aerial Silk material suspended from the ceiling of the 3 Court Gym. Aerial Silks is a highly effective and exciting way to strengthen and shape your entire body. Work to improve your grip strength, coordination, and flexibility and develop stronger shoulders and tighter abs while performing climbs, inversions, holds, and rotations on the silks. Wear comfortable, tight-fitting clothing (tights or leggings, no wide-bottom pants) and make sure that your stomach, the backs of the knees, and armpits are covered. All levels are welcome.

    Prerequisite: Intermediate ballet skills, regular attendance at intermediate or advanced ballet technique classes, and consent of instructor (contact mtaypin@bu.edu). Students learn a contemporary ballet and then work to refine their execution of the material. In addition to class sessions, there are two required showings, a technical rehearsal, a dress rehearsal, and three public performances of the ballet. Regular attendance is required at all classes, showings, rehearsals, and performances. For Fall 2015 there are showings during the semester (Thursday night, Nov. 5), a one hour tech rehearsal is to be determined; dress is Thursday night, Nov. 19; performances are Friday, Nov. 20, 8pm and Sat, Nov. 21, 4 and 8pm with a call two hours prior to the show.     114300 - Marathon Training

    This course will provide the knowledge and physical foundation needed to prepare for completion of a half-marathon or a marathon, with a possibility of completing the Boston Marathon (numbers for the 2014 Boston Marathon are not available through this class). Content will cover topics such as nutrition guidelines for distance running, injury prevention, and maintaining and monitoring a training log. A training plan will be provided, which can be modified to suit your individual goals. Information on obtaining an official entry into the Boston marathon through fundraising efforts will be provided (obtaining official entry to the 2014 Boston Marathon is not guaranteed). The course will meet twice a week for an hour and a half. Opportunities for guided runs throughout the city of Boston as well as interval training, hill repeats and tempo runs will be provided.

    120150 - Parent-Tot C

    For children 18 months-4 years. One parent or guardian must work in the water with the child under the direction of the instructor. This class is not designed to teach children to survive in the water on their own. Following the American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatic Program, children are encouraged to feel comfortable in the water in a fun and safe environment through the use of songs and activities. Parent Tot C includes more advanced skills for infants/toddlers including floating, blowing bubbles, kicking and arm strokes. Information on safety and swimming techniques are also reviewed in class. Ratio of instructor to children is 1:6.

    120200 - Tots in Training

    For 2.5-5 year olds who have completed Parent-Tot B or C and are ready to transition to group lessons but need a little more experience working with an instructor and following directions in a class setting. The first two classes will involve the parent or guardian working with the child in the water with an emphasis on the child working with the instructor on floating, kicking, and putting their face in the water. During the third and fourth lesson, the parent or guardian will remain on the pool deck. For the final two lessons, the parent or guardian will remain in the waiting area, similar to a preschool class. Ratio of instructor to children is 2:5.

    120300 - Wave - Preschool 2

    For 3-5 year olds. Skills from Bubbles are built upon in this class and children are encouraged to try more skills such as, floating and kicking on their front and back with limited support from the instructor when they are ready. Children must be able to comfortably and voluntarily submerge their nose, eyes and mouth to enroll in this class. Completion of Bubbles or an equivalent class is required to enroll in Wave. The ratio for Wave is one instructor to four students.

    For 3-5 year olds. Children should be able to perform skills like floating and submerging underwater comfortably without any support before enrolling in this class. Participants will practice floating and swimming on their front and back as well as kicking and underwater skills. The instructors will encourage swimming without support from instructional devices and introduce the students to deep water. The ratio for Splash is one instructor to five students.

Flip turns, treading water, and head-first entries are emphasized. Students will work to build endurance by swimming longer distances. Prerequisites: Can swim front crawl and back crawl at least 50 yards and all other strokes at least 25 yards. Technique in all the strokes should be strong with good coordination.     120925 - Sensory Swim

    Individual swim lessons designed for adults and children with special needs. Students will be accompanied into the pool with a dedicated personal certified swim instructor to work on life-saving skills, introductory swimming skills in addition to having fun in the water. A parent or other adult is welcome to accompany the student into the water and explore the pool with them. Lessons will aim to improve strength, endurance and coordination while promoting a safe and fun atmosphere. The individual attention from the instructors will also help build self-esteem in a new learning environment. Lesson will be planned for 45 minutes allowing for an additional 15 minutes to provide a smooth transition in and out of the pool. Our pool has a zero depth entry to provide easy access into the water, a lazy river with a gentle current and is kept at 85 degrees.

    130750 - Scuba Diving

    All students must complete a medical form prior to the first day of class.

    Prereq: 200-yard swim test and 10 minute float. Course includes all pool and academic training to become scuba certified with Scuba Schools International (SSI) organization. Pool equipment is provided. Book fee: $85 due to instructor on the first day of class. Open water dives, necessary to become certified, will be offered by instructor for an additional fee of $275. Purchase or rental of personal gear, wetsuit, mask, and fins, is required for open water dives. If students choose to do their open water dive elsewhere, a $45 referral certificate must be purchased.

    150007 - Intramural Pre-Holiday 5 on 5 Basketball Tournament

    Registration will become available on Tuesday, September 6 at 9:30am!

    The Intramural 5 on 5 Pre-Holiday Basketball tournament is played in the FitRec Center 4-court gym Sunday through Thursday evenings. Open, Women's, and Co-Rec divisions are offered in Average (A) or Above Average (AA) competitive levels.Each team will play 2 pool play games and the top teams will advance to a single elimination bracket with the winners being crowned prior to the Thanksgiving break.

    After submitting payment for your team, don't forget to download your roster from the Pre-Holiday Basketball page on the FitRec Website, complete it, and submit it to us via email at IMRoster@bu.edu before the deadline!
