    Prepares the student to take the group exercise instructor certification exam with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and to learn about individualized programs in health and fitness. Lectures include basic anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition, and biomechanics. Practical training workshops are offered in exercise leadership, choreography, and safety.

    210800 - Lifeguard Training

    This American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. Students must attend all sessions and pass the prerequisite swim test on the first day of class which now includes a treading water component (see item details for prerequisite swim test). If students do not successfully pass the swim test, a $50 fee will be withheld. Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Successful completion of the course will result in a two year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. There is a $50 non-refundable fee to register for this class.

    For all aquatic certification classes: Full refunds minus the $50 non-refundable fee upon registration are only granted for documented medical conditions and withdrawal requests made at least two weeks before the class start date.

    Prerequisite: Intermediate ballet skills, regular attendance at intermediate or advanced ballet technique classes, and consent of instructor (contact mtaypin@bu.edu). Students learn a modern ballet and then work to refine their execution of the material. In addition to class sessions, there are two required showings, a technical rehearsal, a dress rehearsal, and three public performances of the ballet. Regular attendance is required at all classes, showings, rehearsals, and performances. Dates and times of all rehearsals and performances are listed in the notes section of web registration.

    This course will provide information focused on a structured training plan for individuals wanting to complete a marathon by the end of the semster, with the possibility of gaining official entry into the Boston Marathon. (There is no guarantee of entry into the Boston Marathon). Content will cover a review of athlete nutrition, injury prevention strategies and the creation of a training program. In addition, topics such as appropriate progression of training, incorporating speed and tempo sessions into a running program, as well as psychological aspects of distance running will be discussed. The creation of fundraising strategies to help students involved with charity running teams will also be covered. The course will meet twice a week for an hour and half. Students must have prior marathon experience and/or consistently run 15-20 miles per week.

The first two classes will involve the parent or guardian working with the child in the water with an emphasis on the child working with the instructor on floating, kicking, and putting their face in the water. During the third and fourth lesson, the parent or guardian will remain on the pool deck. For the final two lessons, the parent or guardian will remain in the waiting area, similar to a preschool class. Ratio of instructor to children is 2:5.

    220925 - Sensory Swim

    Individual swim lessons designed for adults and children with special needs. Students will be accompanied into the pool with a dedicated personal certified swim instructor to work on life-saving skills, introductory swimming skills in addition to having fun in the water. A parent or other adult is welcome to accompany the student into the water and explore the pool with them. Lessons will aim to improve strength, endurance and coordination while promoting a safe and fun atmosphere. The individual attention from the instructors will also help build self-esteem in a new learning environment. Lesson will be planned for 45 minutes allowing for an additional 15 minutes to provide a smooth transition in and out of the pool. Our pool has a zero depth entry to provide easy access into the water, a lazy river with a gentle current and is kept at 85 degrees.

    Prereq: 200-yard swim test and 10 minute float. Course includes all pool and academic training to become scuba certified. Pool equipment is provided. Purchase or rental of personal gear, wetsuit, mask, and fins, is required for open water dives.     This American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. Students must attend all sessions and pass the swim assessment on the first day of class which now includes a treading water component. If students do not successfully pass the swim assessment, a $50 fee will be withheld. Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Successful completion of the course will result in a two year certification in Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED. There is a $50 non-refundable fee to register for this class.

    250010 - Intramural Dodgeball Tournament

    Registration will become available on Tuesday, January 20 at 9:00am!

    The Intramural Dodgeball tournament will be played in the FitRec Center 3-court gym on Sunday, April 12. Men's, Women's, and Co-Rec divisions are offered. The men's tournament will start first at 12 Noon, followed by the Co-Rec Tournament, and the Women's Tournament.

    Each team will play pool play games (number TBD depending on number of teams) and the top teams will advance to a single elimination bracket where a champion will be crowned.

    After submitting payment for your team, don't forget to download your roster from the Dodgeball page on the FitRec Website, complete it, and submit it to us via email at IMRoster@bu.edu before the deadline!

    For intermediate and advanced swimmers who want to improve their fitness and technique through workouts and drills. This class will focus on applying the basics of fitness swimming, including technique drills, flip turns, reading a pace clock and interval training that includes endurance, speed and strength sets. Coached workouts are provided for each class. Prerequisites: ability to swim 200 yards continuously and have competence in front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Students should be able to swim 500 yards in less than 15 minutes.

    348100 - Swimsport Camp:Competitive Swi

    The Competitive Swim division is designed for swimmers ages 9- 13. Each swimmer must be able to swim 50 yards of all four competitive strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breast-stroke and freestyle. There is no time limit, however team experience is preferred. Campers will swim twice a day and sessions will include stroke technique work, refinement of starts and turns and endurance building. Each day campers will meet with coaches to discuss topics such as nutrition, racing strategies, sports psychology and injury prevention - all with an underlying focus on the joy of swimming. Campers will receive video taped underwater stroke analysis and personalized footage to take home. Each session will conclude with a mock meet and spectators are encouraged to attend!
