Beginning Swim - 110050

This is a course for swimmers who have had little or no swimming experience. Instruction will focus on basic swimming skills for beginners to advanced beginners. Skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help yourself and/or others in an aquatic emergency will be covered. Skills to be covered include: floating, breathe control, kicking, front crawl, elementary backstroke, backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, comfort in the deep end of the pool, and treading water. This class takes place in our Recreation Pool.

Beginning Swim for Women - 110100

A learn to swim class designated specifically for women, instructed by a woman, during a time when the pool is closed to other activity to ensure privacy and comfort for beginners. Instruction will focus on basic swimming skills for beginners to advanced beginners. Skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help yourself and/or others in an aquatic emergency will be covered. Specific skills to be covered include: front crawl with rotary breathing, elementary backstroke, backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, comfort in the deep end of the pool, and treading water. This class takes place in our Recreation Pool.

Stroke Improvement - 110150

Stroke Improvement is a course designed to improve participants’ proficiency in basic aquatic skills and the six basic swimming strokes. The instructors will teach skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. Skills to be covered include: refinement of front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke, introduction to butterfly, and continued practice for comfort in deep water. This class takes place in our Competition Pool.

Prerequisites:
- Comfortable in chest-deep water
- Able to put their face in the water
- Able to perform strokes that can be recognized as front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and back crawl, each for 15 yards

Fitness Swim - 110200

For intermediate and advanced swimmers who want to improve their fitness and technique through workouts and drills. This class will focus on applying the basics of fitness swimming, including technique drills, flip turns, reading a pace clock and interval training that includes endurance, speed and strength sets. Coached workouts are provided for each class. Prerequisites: ability to swim 200 yards continuously and have competence in front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Students should be able to swim 500 yards in less than 15 minutes.

This American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. This is a private class for Lifeguard Training students only. You must be registered for the corresponding Lifeguard Training section in order to participate in this course.

This American Red Cross certification class is designed for students who are interested in working at non-surf, open-water facilities including parks, resorts and summer camps with waterfront areas. Students must attend all sessions and pass the prerequisite swim test on the first day of class which now includes a treading water component and a longer swimming component than Lifeguard Training (see item details for prerequisite swim test). If students cannot complete the Waterfront swim assessment but can complete the Lifeguard Training requirements, they are welcome to continue in the basic level course but no refund of fees will be offered. Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Successful completion of the course will result in a two year certification in Waterfront Lifeguard Training and Waterfront skills.

This LGI certification will enable successful instructor candidates to teach Lifeguarding classes and other related certification classes. Instructor candidates must be at least 17 years old by the completion of the class. Candidates must have a current ARC certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED and must pass the prerequisite swim and skills test on the first day of class. Participants must attend all class sessions and bring their own adult and infant pocket mask. A $100 fee will be retained from those who do not pass the swim and skills test. Review and practice is highly recommended before enrolling in this course. There is a $100 non-refundable fee to register for this class.

For all aquatic certification classes: Full refunds minus the $100 non-refundable fee upon registration are only granted for documented medical conditions and withdrawal requests made at least two weeks before the class start date. Participants are responsible for any Red Cross certification fees that will be paid directly to the Red Cross.
