Rookie Rowing - 317060

Participants are taught the fundamentals of the sweep rowing stroke on land, then in a stable training barge, and then in eight oared rowing shells. Sweep rowing is the style of rowing where each athlete holds one oar with both hands, and is commonly seen in college and Olympic rowing. It's a great introduction to the sport in a group setting where teamwork is a major component of the class! Basic safety instruction and procedures are also taught and emphasized. It may be necessary to steer and take control of a crew and boat as a coxswain as part of the class. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the BU Boating Swim Test

Rowing & Sculling, Beginning - 317070

This class will offer new rowers exposure to all elements of the sport: indoor rowing on the ergometer, sweep rowing (each rower uses one oar), and sculling (each rower uses two oars). The goal is to provide comprehensive exposure to this wonderful sport in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. After completing this class rowers can choose to progress into sweep rowing, sculling, or both while having a base of knowledge and skills to build off of. Additionally, the indoor rowing machine (ergometer) is an increasingly popular form of exercise at the local gym, crossfit gyms, and there are even indoor rowing classes similar to a spinning class nowadays. The technical coaching will allow rowers completing this class to be comfortable and confident using the indoor rower during the off-water season to vary up their workouts. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the BU Boating Swim Test.
