Students will learn how to perform the lifesaving skills used in respiratory and cardiac emergencies as well as basic treatments for a variety of injuries and illnesses. Topics include bandaging, splinting, wound care, and CPR/AED use for adults, children and infants. Topics will be covered in lecture and reinforced through practice. Those who pass will be certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED for two years.
This course trains individuals in the skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care in pet emergencies. CPR and first aid skills for dogs and cats are emphasized through lectures, readings, and video, and then reinforced through hands-on practice on manikins. Topics include but are not limited to choking, medical emergencies, and care for injuries. Upon completion of this course students will be certified in Pet First Aid/CPR through ECSI for two years. Class fee includes required textbook and materials.
This three hour class is for those currently certified in Healthcare Provider CPR or the equivalent. The class consists of a review of all adult, child, and infant CPR skills. Those who pass the written and practical exam receive a new two-year certification in Healthcare Provider CPR. Class fee does not include required text and resuscitation mask.
Prereq.: Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid Certification. This class certifies individuals to teach Adult, Child, and Infant CPR with AED, Healthcare Provider CPR as well as Basic First Aid for the Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI). Class fee includes required textbooks and materials.
A course that prepares students to take the written and practical EMT exams issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the National Registry of EMTs. Students learn the essentials of pre-hospital emergency care. The course includes lecture, lab and ambulance and hospital observation time. There are no prerequisites but 100% attendance is mandatory. Those who pass written and practical exams will be eligible to test for their EMT certification. This class meets on select Saturdays and Sundays. Class fee includes required textbooks, materials, lab and certification fees and CPR training.
This program meets the National Core Competency Requirements for recertification at the National Registry EMT, EMT-Basic, and MA EMT-Basic level. This course also meets the requirements for the National Registry EMT-Basic to EMT transition course. It is a 20-hour course. The course covers topics including, but not limited to: airway management, respiratory emergencies, cardiovascular emergencies, trauma assessment and skills, medical assessment and skills, and EMS operations.
Airway ManagementAirway Management is a unique program designed to give students the chance to learn, practice and demonstrate their ability in applying many airway skills used in resuscitation. Students increase their awareness of various airway products and skills required. Taught by a military emergency medicine resident physician, this course will offer a look at medicine in situations that are challenging from an environmental, physical and mental perspective. Topics covered will include an overview of common environmental injuries and challenges, with a special focus on altitude and dive environments. Students will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge through several scenario-based cases. OEMS approved for 3 hours of continuing education.
Learn how to critically review EMS research. The class will feature an in-depth analysis of an EMS research article. We will read through an abstract section by section. In each section, we will pick apart what is being said and how to understand the statistics. Through this method, students will learn the concepts needed to understand other research articles.Note: This course is presented as a virtual instructor lead training. Students will login to an online classroom at the time the class occurs. Understanding Patient Acuity; an ED Approach.This discussion will be about how to recognize and properly treat the low acuity patient. More often than not EMS tends to over treat and over triage patients; using an ED based approach we can better triage and more properly treat our patients resulting in better outcomes with less morbidity and mortality.Note: This course is presented as a virtual instructor lead training. This 3 hour course focuses on head, spine, and musculoskeletal injuries caused by active sports. Anatomy, physiology, and treatment for different traumatic mechanisms of injury will be reviewed. Participants will discuss the assessment and management of various injuries followed by practical application. Mild Traumatic Brain InjuryThis two hour continuing education course will cover the physiology behind sports related mTBIs (concussions). It will provide training in hands-on and symptomatic mTBI assessment and treatment.OEMS approved for 2 hours of continuing education.
This course will review and update EMT skills of assessment and management of respiratory emergencies. Topics will include assessment and treatment of specific respiratory emergencies and generalized assessment of a patient in acute respiratory distress. Psychiatric EmergenciesPsychiatric emergencies are among the most unpredictable situations in the pre-hospital setting. The unique presentation of these patients necessitates a specialized approach to provide them with the best care possible. This course will cover topics such as size up, the mental status exam and common mistakes. Massachusetts Protocol UpdateThis course will review the 2018 protocol update. In addition, some major highlights from the past few updates will be noted in how these change patient care at the EMT level. Students will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge through several scenario-based cases. This class is open to EMTs, AEMTs and Paramedics.OEMS approved for 2 hours of continuing education.
Endocrine EmergenciesTaught by a military emergency medicine physician, this course will cover the 4 endocrine emergencies an EMT or paramedic would be expected to face in the field. Topics covered will include diabetic emergencies, as well as thyroid and adrenal emergencies, such as myxedema and adrenal insufficiency. Students will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge through several scenario-based cases.OEMS approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
Trauma Assessment and Management Taught by a military emergency medicine physician, this course will explore advanced trauma assessment and management in both urban and austere environments and challenge experienced pre-hospital providers with hands on cases. Topics covered will include chest, abdominal, CNS, orthopedic and vascular trauma, as well as techniques for mitigating bleeding, stabilization of patients and transport to definitive care.OEMS approved for 3 hours of continuing education
This course consists of lectures given online by an instructor teaching in real time. Labs are held on select days, in person at Boston University. Ambulance and hospital observations are arranged with local companies and hospitals. Students must have a computer with working webcam, speakers and microphone and reliable access to internet. This course prepares students to take the written and practical EMT exams issued by the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health and the National Registry of EMTs.
